Don't Mistake the Tools for the Task
Engaging God's Word
A quick story to start this week: I was at the doctor’s office for my annual physical (we need it because we’re still waiting to adopt internationally), and just as my physician was getting started, his computer shut down! It didn’t derail our appointment, but it was somewhat funny to see just how dependent we are on computers to do our jobs.
Of course, my physician didn’t need the computer to perform the actual checkup. He asked questions. He used his hands. He listened with his stethoscope and otoscope. Basic skills with some standard tools.
When it comes to Bible study, helpful tools are valuable, but they are not what make engagement with God’s Word possible.
There may be many things we think we need in order to get into God’s Word, but basic skills with some standard tools are often all we need. Even a simple reading of the text can be a meaningful encounter with God’s Word.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m a proud user and promoter of Logos Bible Study Software, Crossway+, and more. I’ve read many books that have helped me study Scripture. Those tools are helpful, but they are not essential. My physician’s computer may have made his job easier, but it wasn’t what enabled him to care for me. A good doctor doesn’t engage a computer; he engages his patient. The computer is simply a tool that supports that work.
The same is true when it comes to studying the Bible. We don’t engage commentaries, study guides, or software. We engage God’s Word. Those tools can help us understand the text, but they are never a substitute for the text itself. God gave us His Word to be read, understood, and lived. Open your Bible and read.
