Every Line Matters
Deep Dialogue
When Jess and I watch a movie or TV show, we’re very particular about the way we watch:
We watch with the subtitles on.
We don’t talk to each other while we’re watching.
We’ll rewind or replay scenes if something moved too fast, if we didn’t understand it, or if we felt it was important.
Over time, we learned to appreciate dialogue more deeply. I think that started when we began rewatching the Marvel Cinematic Universe and noticed how certain lines called back to—or pointed forward to—other movies.
In film, very few lines are meaningless. Almost everything is either building character or advancing the story.
