Every Line Matters
Preaching Scripture
In film, very few lines are meaningless. Almost everything is either developing character or advancing the story. When we read the Bible, we should recognize that God writes with intentionality and purpose.
As preachers, we should preach in a way that draws attention to what God does as an author. We explain what words mean. We unpack phrases. We make connections. We follow the story closely without missing the bigger picture.
This should not feel mechanical or boring. There should still be excitement and joy as we explain the text. We don’t replace the voice of God with our own, but we proclaim His Word in a way that makes its meaning loud and clear.

James Ussher was a highly prolific titan of publication in the seventeenth century, and his writings earned the esteem of many in the Reformed churches. Still, a mountain of his unpublished manuscripts remains in the archives, ripe for investigation and full of just as much insight as his published works. This volume collects three of Ussher’s most significant unpublished manuscripts, each covering the major topics of theology. With introduction and explanatory apparatus by Harrison Perkins, these documents are available for the first time in print and in translation, shedding fresh light on Ussher’s contribution to the Reformed tradition.
