Holding VBS with Open Hands
Keeping Ministry in Its Proper Place
This week I wrote about being busy with VBS and the trap of centering our conversations only on ministry and the work of the church, rather than on the lives of our people. Don’t let the busyness of ministry overshadow our calling to love others by taking a genuine interest in their lives. I also shared how VBS is a helpful vehicle for missions, but it isn’t essential.
Today, I want to conclude this short series with some practical suggestions for keeping VBS in its proper place.
Let everything be done with prayer, and give praise to God for it all. VBS is ultimately God’s work, not ours.
Measure the success of VBS by faithfulness, not numbers. Did you faithfully proclaim the gospel? Did you care well for your volunteers and the children who attended?
Care for your volunteers. Thank them often. Listen to their honest feedback. As you evaluate the week, make decisions that are sustainable for your church and loving toward the people who serve.
Help volunteers continue serving beyond VBS. Encourage them to use the gifts they exercised during VBS in other ministries throughout the year.
Teach children that missions don’t end with VBS. Help them see that following Jesus and sharing the gospel are part of everyday life, not just one week each summer.
