Opportunity and Responsibility
Parents and Preachers, Help Us Hear the Glory of God
Can you hear God’s glory? We often speak in terms of seeing the glory of God—but can we also hear it?
I previously shared two specific places we hear God’s glory: in nature and in preaching. On a practical level, this means we must listen attentively to God in the world around us and listen actively to God in the preaching of his Word. Here is a word of encouragement for parents and preachers:
1. Parents, provide opportunities.
Parents can provide opportunities for their children to listen attentively by taking them outside (and away from screens) and pointing out God’s glory. When we default to screens and entertainment, we rob our children of opportunities to hear from God through observing the natural world. Because they are children, however, it is also appropriate to directly point out ways God can be heard through his creation.
2. Preachers, take responsibility.
Preachers can take responsibility to preach effectively through preparation and prayer. When we fail to prepare, we give our flesh and desires an opportunity to commandeer the pulpit. And without prayer, we may rely on our own eloquence to move people instead of depending on the power of the Holy Spirit to change hearts.
