The Glory of God Heard Through Song

Can you hear God’s glory? We often speak in terms of seeing the glory of God—but can we also hear it?

Previously, I shared two specific places we hear God’s glory: in nature and in preaching. On a practical level, this means we must listen attentively to God in the world around us and listen actively to God in the preaching of his Word. We can encourage parents to provide opportunities for their children and preachers to take responsibility for their congregation.

I want to conclude this series with a brief word on hearing the glory of God through singing.

¹⁶ Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. — Colossians 3:16

As creatures, we were made to glorify God. This is what we were created and intended to do. As human beings, we have been uniquely given language and song, enabling us to glorify God consciously and verbally with our words.

Singing gives our bodies, minds, and hearts the opportunity to glorify God together. It is a deeply human endeavor. Not only is singing something we can do individually and privately, but it is also something we can do corporately and publicly.

When God’s people gather to sing, it is both a natural and supernatural experience like no other. We join together in worship with creatures and saints across the world, as well as with those in heaven.

This Sunday, when the church gathers, I pray that you sing to God’s glory—and hear it echoed back through his people.
