Slow and Steady Influences
Impact Over Years and Decades
Last week, I wrote about how brief and seemingly small influences can leave a strong and lasting impact. Today, I want to consider the influences that shape us slowly over years and even decades.
Parents and family. The presence of a father and mother in a child’s life is unparalleled. Parents have the opportunity to shape hearts and minds from an early age, and they often continue to be a significant influence well into adulthood.
Husbands and wives. The daily influence of a spouse, our closest earthly relationship, is profound. It is a relationship that should be stewarded with great care.
Children. We often think about the influence parents have on their children, but the influence also runs the other direction. As a parent, my children continually challenge me to grow in love, patience, and wisdom.
Friends. Faithful friends shape us through years of shared experiences, encouragement, correction, and accountability. Friendships like these are rare and difficult to replace, especially as we grow older.
The church. Both the preaching of God’s Word and the fellowship of God’s people shape us as we worship, learn, and share life together week after week. When you remain in one church for many years—as I have—you begin to see how deeply a faithful church forms your faith.
None of these influences changes us overnight. But over years and decades, they become some of God’s primary means of shaping us into the people he calls us to be.
