Summer Lessons: Seasons that Shaped My Life

When I was a child, I saw summer as a season of growth and opportunity. Summers were also an important part of my spiritual life. Yesterday I wrote about my memories of Church Camp, and today I’ll write about VBS.
I don’t really remember attending VBS as a child, but what sticks with me are the times I served in VBS. I think this is where I realized that even as a youth, I could serve others in the church. I remember the excitement of planning and preparation.
As a youth, I served as the worship lead. Our church allowed me to lead regular worship songs as well as VBS songs that I learned to play on my electric guitar. I played with other youth in a full band, and it reminded me of the joy I felt when I first saw a worship band at church camp.
I remember arriving early to set up and staying late to debrief. I remember being happy that my summer was being spent doing something worthwhile for God. I remember having fun with the team. And I remember the satisfaction of being tired—spent in service to the Lord.

Endnotes
In After Church Hurt, Tim St. John provides a path to healing in the care of the Good Shepherd. He defines church hurt as any unrepentant sin that is minimized, normalized, or promoted by a church culture and its leadership, and he makes it clear that he writes this book out of love for the bride of Christ.
