We Are Destined for This
God's Path of Persecution
I’m preaching this coming Sunday, and there’s a phrase that stands out to me in 1 Thessalonians 3:3: “For you yourselves know that we are destined for this.” It’s such a striking sentence. What is Paul talking about?
The answer is found in the next verse: “For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction, just as it has come to pass, and just as you know” (1 Thessalonians 3:4). Paul repeatedly told the church that they would suffer affliction. He was talking about persecution.
While this was the destiny of the Thessalonians, it is also true for Christians today. Persecution is to be expected. Indeed, “all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12). If they persecuted Jesus, they will also persecute us (John 15:20).
When persecution comes, we must remember that it is the path God has chosen for his people. Rather than discouraging us, it can drive us to God. He uses it to strengthen our faith, embolden our witness, and teach us to depend on His power rather than our own. As a result, we can stand firm for Christ and press on in His strength.
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. — 1 Peter 4:12-13

Endnotes
In Christ Our All, Chance Faulkner writes a 14-day devotional that focuses your eyes to gaze at Christ. What I loved most was how many beautiful perspectives Faulkner presents. This book reminded me of the great Puritans of the past, cutting to the heart with pointed questions while also encouraging and building your spirit up with Scripture. Giveaway and review.
