Writing Challenges
Three Ways to Write
I’ve been thinking about challenging myself, and recently I’ve written about challenging myself with my electric guitar, leading our church youth in worship, and how I read. Another area where I try to challenge myself is in my writing:
Substack: Writing daily has been a challenge for me on Substack—and I’ve tried to vary my writing in both length and content. If you’ve noticed, I’ve been challenging myself by writing through topics as a series of posts, and I’ve really enjoyed it!
Book reviews: Depending on the type of book, my book reviews can range from quick blurbs to in-depth reports. While I try to maintain a positive perspective, I also want to wrestle honestly with the content and share how it plays out in my personal life.
Sermons: I’ve been writing out my sermons since I started preaching consistently, and I’ve challenged myself to be intentional with my word choice, as well as experiment with how I set up the flow and structure of each sermon. I’ve also tried to write keeping both readability and spoken delivery in mind.
I’m currently writing my sermon for Sunday! Would you please say a quick prayer for me?

Preaching is More Than Just Exegeting a Passage
Thomas: Because preaching is more than just exegeting a passage—and I think that’s part of where I still find some difficulties with a lot of contemporary preaching, in that at the end of it, I’ve got what a commentary will tell you, what a bunch of commentaries will tell you. But my heart hasn’t been stirred. My affections haven’t been moved. My will hasn’t been engaged. And for Lloyd-Jones preaching was essentially that.
